How Anti-Virus Stopped a Browser Hijack
Like most people I use my computers for all sorts of things and could be transferring some files while I am collecting my email, editing some code and waiting for an online auction to end - all at the same time. I am glad to say that most days are pretty un-eventful - at least from a computing point of view. But today I was surprised to find my anti-virus program popping up to warn me of an event and focussing my attention on my web browser which, when I left it, was displaying my page of an auction website (you know the one).
While I was distracted I had been forwarded from my home page to one that was attempting to download the latest `update` for a plugin and would have gone ahead without my knowledge had my Anti-virus not intervened. This `update` would have hijacked my web browser, rendering it pretty useless as any searches would have been directed to `the bad guys` websites instead of Googles Search Results. Goodness knows what else the errant software would have installed to steal information such as log-in details, personal data etc.
So If You See A Screen Like This
Be vary wary of any un-initiated browser download requests, especially if they start automatically.
Keep your computer updated especially your browser and don`t skimp on anti-virus. In fact why not get together with friends and purchase a `multi user` license and share the cost of the security suite.
A one user license for Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 currently costs £21.99 but you could by a 3 user license for £24.50, equivalent to £8.16 each! At that price it`s not worth risking your online security.
